World news is a jargon term in journalism that refers to news reports from abroad, covering a global subject or region. In the case of major news agencies, a large proportion of their stories are world news, although they can also contain national news. Historically, the bulk of a newspaper’s news was foreign, as recorded by the courants of the 17th century in Europe (although even then the concept of nation-states was still developing). The term world news also covers news reported by journalists based in a particular foreign city, but who do not have a full-time contract with a media outlet, and instead produce material on a freelance basis. These reporters are often referred to as stringers, and typically produce work for several different companies at once.
While much of the news we hear about on a daily basis centers around crisis and controversy, there are some remarkable things happening in our world that deserve to be heard. The Reddit user u/cthulhus_spawn recently asked if people could share some good news they’ve seen lately, and the responses were both hopeful and eye-opening.
