A news update is an article that gives readers a quick rundown of important current events. The story begins with the most newsworthy information and builds to include more details, quotes and context as it goes on. Following a format called the “inverted pyramid,” the most important facts are listed first so that people can get a sense of the major points even if they don’t read all the way to the bottom of the article.
Follow the news and jump at opportunities. It’s a journalist’s job to be on the lookout for stories that connect with larger current events or issues. If a celebrity dies or a new scandal emerges on a reality show, for example, it may provide the fresh angle your article needs to grab reader attention. Similarly, keep an eye on holidays and anniversaries that might be relevant to your topic.
