How to Write for a News Outlet
Media outlets are where you go to get the latest news and information. They might be in a variety of formats, such as broadcasters (like the BBC and CNN), newspapers or digital platforms. Getting the right news to the right audience is important for a news outlet. You need to know what your audience wants to read about so that you can focus on those topics. For example, if you want to write about a new technology trend then it would be good to know whether your audience is interested in companies like Apple or Google who are pushing that tech forward or if they are more interested in the broader implications of what that trend means for the future of humanity.
It’s also important to understand what kind of tone your audience will respond best to. For instance, sarcasm and humour isn’t usually appropriate for news reporting and can alienate readers. It is often better to save snark for your op-eds or personal essays. Finally, always read your article over again once you have finished writing it and make sure you have kept to an unbiased, fact-based tone. It’s also a good idea to let someone else read it so that they can catch any errors that you may have missed. Ideally, they can give you some constructive criticism too!
